BW11 - J is for judge

I have a challenge for you this week:  Judge a book by its cover.   Much easy said than done, believe me.  The task is to pick out a book based on its cover.  However, you can not look inside or on the back to see what it is about. Nor can you look up the information online.   Based on its cover, decide what you think its about and write up a little snippet, either here or one your blog.  Read the book and then let us know if you were right, close or not even in the ballpark.

The first time I ever did this was for another challenge by Jenners of Life with Books who hosted the Take a Chance Challenge.  I went into the bookstore and failed miserably.  I just couldn't keep from checking out the synopsis.  I went online instead to Amazon and picked out books based on their covers. I selected 5 unknown to me authors and then using Random.org selected one of the books. You can read about it here.

Saturday James and I went to Borders and I decided to give it another try.  I browsed through the books and then I saw this one:

There wasn't a whole lot to go on, it was beautifully packaged and captured my attention so decided to buy it.  My guess based on the cover, the title and information provided:  It's a historical fiction mystery, involving an intriguing lady, thorny roses represent death so must have a murder or two and the maze, many puzzles to figure out.  I know that's generic but that's the best I can do.  What do you think?

I went on to Amazon and picked out a few random books based on their covers.  I know absolutely nothing about them.  Your task, pick one and tell us what you think it is about.

The Pint Man by Steve Rushin

Silent Mercy by Linda Fairstein
Comedy in a minor Key by Hans Keilson
Where Shadows Dance by C.S. Harris
Bound By Guilt - C.J. Darlington
By Nightfall by Michael Cunningham

They all looked rather intriguing to me.  What about you?  Would you pick up any of them because of the cover?   Pick out which one you think I should read.  I'll read the book that gets the most votes, then report back to you what it was about.

It's daylight savings time again - hope you didn't forget to set your clocks forward.

  2. We enjoyed reading Om-kas-toe this week. It's one book in a series about Native American children growing up in different time periods and in different tribes. It's a great book for people of all ages!

  3. I read/reviewed The Merry Adventures of Robin Hood, by Howard Pyle this week. Such a fascinating time period.

  4. Okay, I'll guess that Where Shadows Dance is an historical fiction mystery based possibly in the 1800s? and involving a church?

That's the one I'd pick to read based only on the cover.

  5. Hmm, the most intriguing one to me is By Nightfall. I'd guess it's about death somehow. Maybe a middle aged woman dealing with a terminal diagnois and the unresolved issues of her life. Or maybe it's not actual death but something like the death of a marriage.

  6. Comedy in a Minor Key intrigues me most. I'll have to see if I can dig that one up at the library!

  8. Where Shadows Dance looks good, based on the cover. This is an intriguing idea. I may do this next time I select a review book.

  9. I've never participated in your challenge before--I think next year I'll have to make this my main challenge and accept all of your mini challenges--they are intriguing.

I pick Nightfall--I think it is a murder mystery and someone will die at night fall.

  11. You have to read The Pint Man so you can tell me if it's any good :-)

  12. Is it too late to comment on The Pint Man? I just read it, and I think it was fantastic. But then again, I'm a word freak, and loved the puns with which The Pint Man abounds. In the dental chair today, I told my oral hygienist that the jargon they spoke in the office was their lingual franca.
