Ysabel by Guy Gavriel Kay

Ysabel is the latest book by Guy Gavriel Kay. I have read everything else he’s written (except his poetry) and always enjoy his books. Most of his novels occur in an alternate Europe. His first trilogy began in modern day normal world but the primary events took place in another place. Two of those characters returned and they play a part in this story as well.

As always, well written. I enjoy his characters (they are interesting and aren’t perfect, but aren’t flawed in some disagreeable way either) and his description of the place. Provence is a desirable place and he uses that in this book. Everyone has been there and that is touched on through the book. As always, he pulls history in to it.

The main point to the book is that some places have a story that lives on. This is the story of 3 people who have been part of the history of Provence for 2600 years. Other people get caught up in their story this time, and it changes the story.

Ned is a 15 year old boy on a trip with his father, a famous photographer. He gets pulled into something out of this world. He thinks he interfered, but he learns later he was involved by someone else (Phelan). Then his father’s assistant gets caught up in it and is transformed into Ysabel. Now he has to save her.

Turns out his aunt is Kim Ford from the Fionavar Tapestry Trilogy, married to Dave Martinyiuk these 25 years. Ned’s mom and Kim haven’t spoken since the events of that trilogy.

As good as all the others. Glad I have added it to my collection.
